The problem: Spider veins also called thread veins, broken veins and capillary veins are small red, blue or purple veins that usually appear near the surface of the skin on the thighs, calves and ankles. Although most people seek treatment for cosmetic reasons, they can also cause aching, itchiness, a feeling of heaviness in the leg and night cramps. Tiny thread veins can also be found on the face, the cheeks, and under the eyes. They can be caused by too much exposure to the sun, pregnancy and estrogen treatment. As you get older and the skin becomes thinner, they can become more obvious and unsightly.

The treatment: Fractional Laser Removal, or DermaPen (see alternative treatment page from the drop down menu above)

The results: The appearance of the veins is greatly improved and the associated symptoms usually disappear as well. No Downtime.

What Does The Treatment Involve? Fractional Laser treatment involves directing intense light directly at the veins. This causes the blood within them to coagulate and the blood is then diverted to veins deeper below the surface of the skin where it should be. The Laser 'tricks' your body into thinking there is damage in the associated area and it heals accordingly, in time removing all trace of the vein. You will be given a Vitamin K Serum to take home and rub into the area daily, this will assist in the coagulation and help prevent new leakage between treatments allowing the laser to work more effectively.

Does It Hurt? For the majority of people the answer is no, however you may feel a slight stinging sensation or pins and needles as the Fractional lasers are delivered.

How Long Does It Take? Laser sessions last between 5 and 15 minutes, again depending on the area to be treated. A course of 3 is recommended. Usually you will notice an improvement in the appearance of your spider veins after your first session, however, a number of sessions may be needed before the veins are fully eliminated.

As the laser works two fold, 1. by coagulating the blood and diverting it to lower deeper veins and 2. by tricking your body into repair of the area, it can take several weeks after initial treatment to see a result, a healthy strong immune system will speed up this process and so the time it takes varies patient to patient, it also depends on the size and location of the veins. A course of three is often recommended with a 4-6 week break between treatments.

How Long Will Results Last? The results are permanent. Once the veins have been removed, they are gone for good. However, clients should bear in mind that this does not mean new ones wont develop. Hormonal changes, pregnancy, weight gain and occupations that involve long periods on your feet can all be contributing factors.
